Formed in 1893 as the “Southern Counties Amateur Bands Association”, scaba is the local association for brass bands in the South East of England. Any brass bands in the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London Boroughs, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire are eligible for membership.

The objects of scaba are to to raise the playing standard and/or awareness of all member bands by organising, running and managing competitions, festivals, training opportunities and other events; to encourage an atmosphere of fellowship and co-operation and to facilitate the opportunity for a fair exchange of views.

scaba has always been a very active association and works hard to put the interests of its member bands and brass players first.  The association is a member of Brass Bands England (formerly the British Federation of Brass Bands) and has representatives on the committee of the London & Southern Counties region of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

scaba is proud to have formed the Southern Counties Youth Band in 2014, providing young players from all over the region with an opportunity to learn from talented brass teachers and musicians and perform to new audiences.  More information about the youth band can be found on the SCYB page of this website.

A year in the life of scaba typically includes three brass band contests:  the Spring Contest which in 2018 is moving to February, the Entertainment Contest in May and an Autumn Contest in late September.  We have an annual Solo and Quartet contest which will be returning towards the end of 2018, and our year is often rounded off in November with a Workshop.

The Southern Counties Youth Band

SCYB was set up by scaba to encourage young brass players to improve their playing ability and to have fun making music.

The band meets once a month on a Sunday from September to April, ending with a residential course and public concert at Easter.

Membership of the band is open to anyone aged 11 to 18 who plays a brass band instrument to at least grade 4 standard.  Look in the SCYB section of the website for more news, photos and information & application packs.

scaba's first Regional test piece workshop took place at The Hawth on 11th February with AoBBA adjudicators Nick Garman and Chris King and the London & Southern Counties Champion Band, Friary Guildford.
