  SCABA Autumn Contest 2008

SCABA has great pleasure in extending to your band a most cordial invitation to take part in the 2008 Autumn Contest which is to be held at the Leas Cliff Hall and Channel Conference Suite, Folkestone, on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October.

This event has become one of the largest independent contests for brass bands in the country and receives support from near and far, including mainland Europe.  Folkestone is reached easily via the motorway network and visitors to the town will find it an interesting location.  The harbour and shopping areas are just a few minutes walk from Leas Cliff Hall, providing an ideal day out for the family.

Full details of the contest are shown in the enclosed Schedule and it should be noted that entries received after 6th September 2008 cannot be accepted.  Included in the Schedule, as usual, is a copy of the Rules and Conditions for Registration and Contesting so that everyone is aware of all of the requirements.  Please contact our Registrar if you need clarification of any of the rules.  The contest takes the form of an Own Choice Hymn Tune and an Own Choice Test Piece.

A glance through the Schedule will show there have been changes to the Entry Fee for each section, and to the Affiliation Fee.  As with some of our previous contests, SCABA has again arranged to hire the percussion items shown in the Schedule and Entry Fees have been increased to recover part of this cost.  Also, the Warm-up fee is incorporated into the Entry Fee, in order avoid the need for handling cash on the day of the contest.  Finally, the re-establishment of last year’s contest at the Leas Cliff Hall was achieved only at significant additional cost to the Association and it was necessary to find ways of reducing other costs.  Similarly this year, the cost of staging the contest continues to be partially offset by the decision not to award Prize Monies.  We hope that bands will continue to appreciate the need for this, and that the availability of a wide range of percussion proves beneficial in offsetting transport costs for individual bands.

One other offer of assistance we are happy to provide is help in finding nearby hotel accommodation for bands wishing to join those who stay over on a regular basis.  Leas Cliff Hall is adjacent to a varied selection of accommodation and most hotels are prepared to offer favourable terms for a group booking.  Please let me know if you need help.

We very much look forward to receiving your entry for this year, as we continue to strive to keep the Contest at the forefront of our banding calendar.
