New format Proms in the Paddock a crowd-puller

LGB Brass teamed up with two other local organisations for a concert that pulled in the band’s biggest audience of the year.

About 1,500 people attended Proms in the Paddock on Saturday July 12th – the annual outdoor concert and fireworks display in the Paddock park.

The event, which has become a highlight of the Lewes summer, was organised as usually by LGB Brass and the town’s Commercial Square Bonfire Society.  But for the first time this year, the band was joined by singers from the Lewes-based East Sussex Community Choir.

The evening began with a concert by LGB Brass, conducted by Ian Stewart.  The programme featured music from films and shows, including Breezin’ down Broadway, New York, New York and the themes from Starwars and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The choir, conducted by Susan Bain, then took over with numbers included Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, I could have danced all night and Some Enchanted Evening. LGB’s youth ensemble, led by Matt Key, picked up the tempo with jazz and swing numbers, including Marching the Blues, Sky Train and a big band style version of Greensleeves.

Band and choir then came together to lead the audience in Prom night favourites, Sussex by the Sea, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.  The evening ended with the traditional LGB performance of the 1812 Overture accompanied by fireworks from Commercial Square Bonfire Society.
LGB Brass secretary, Jane Waldron, said:  “Proms in the Paddock is the highlight of our year.  As usual, the audience was fantastic. This year, we were delighted to be joined by the East Sussex Community Choir and look forward to putting on more concerts together in future.”

LGB Brass is the concert name of Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band
