Annual Solo, Quartet & Ensemble Contest
|

The
annual Solo, Quartet & Ensemble Contest took
places at Ringmer Community College on Sunday
17th February. The contest attracted 51
entries, of which 4 withdrew. The Junior and
Youth events attracted a good audience of Mums,
Dads and band supporters, which in turn meant
that both Sharon McCallum and Mostyn Music who
both had trade stands there also, hopefully, had
a good day. Refreshments this year were
provided by the Ringmer Scouts and Guides
Associations. They will be using their profits
from the day to boost their fund for a new loo
in the Scout Hall.
The
usual team of Ian Carter, Ron & Ivy Gray and
Colin & Sybil Morrison held everything together,
with stewarding support from Doug & Janet
Blackford, Andy Wilson, Chris Cannings, Pat
Steele and Alex Emberley. Norman Every did his
usual fantastic job as MC and also did more than
his bit in calming the nerves of some of the
younger entrants. Our grateful thanks must also
go to the LGB President Dennis Wilby and his
wife Margaret who stayed all day and also
assisted with stewarding. Margaret was the
official photographer for the day. Margaret has
kindly agreed to send all her photos on to Ian
Carter, so if anyone would like theirs sent
electronically, please e-mail Ian
iancarter@scaba.co.uk
I must also
thank Simon Emberley and Dave Pattenden of LGB
Brass for their significant contributions in
organising the contest.
We
were pleased to have David Barringer
adjudicating for all the quartets and
ensembles. David spoke to the audience at each
results ceremony, giving his honest thoughts and
constructive comments. His hard work was much
appreciated by those taking part, especially in
light of the fact that the temperature in the
hall was less than warm. Sitting still in the
box for several hours having to concentrate hard
isn't easy at the best of times, let alone when
you're a bit on the chilly side!
Linda
Cole adjudicated for the Junior and Youth Solo
competitions. In her comments to the audience,
Linda remarked on the maturity of sound of some
of the competitors and the hard work that had
obviously gone in to preparing all of
the entries. Again, Linda produced constructive
comments for all the competitors which will
hopefully encourage them all to continue to
develop as brass players.
