|
The
Band presented its Summer Concert at St. Paul’s Church
in Chichester last Friday evening to a supportive
audience. Conducted by Resident Musical Director, John
Williams, the Band opened with the its signature tune
Sussex By The Sea (W. Ward Higgs) before taking on
the Light Cavalry (F. von Suppe). Resounding
applause rewarded the Band’s faultless performance of
this well known overture. Donna Britt gave a tender
rendering of the traditional Maori melody Hine e Hine
(Daughter, Oh! Daughter) (arr. P. Graham) on flugel
which was followed by Alfie Hughes countering with the
ragtime cornet number Buster Strikes Back (Alan
Morrison). The Band ended their first session with the
lively Mexican tune El Es El Senor (D. Jones).
The
Band’s training band, including several recent players
who have recently graduated into the main ensemble, took
the stage to perform Pirates Of The Caribbean : Dead
Man’s Chest (H. Zimmer), I Don’t Know How To Love
Him (A. Webber) and Sway (Jan van Kraeydonck).
The
test-piece for the Torquay Brass Band Contest in the
Autumn is to be Variations on ‘Laudate Dominum’
(Edward Gregson) and the Band shewed their distinct
appreciation of the difficulties to be encountered if
the Band visit the resort again this year in opening the
second half. Karen Austin displayed a
master(mistress)ful versatility on the BBb bass tuba
with Forty Fathoms (H.L. Walters) despite the
initial attentions of her fellow male members in the
section following which the entire bass section then
featured with a tight opening to Hernando’s Hideaway
(Richard Adler & Jerry Ross). Also featured in this
piece as a soloist was Natalie Talbot on castanets who
was appearing on percussion for her first concert with
the Band. Iona Harrison performed the cornet solo
Share My Yoke ((Joy Webb) and her compassionate
rendition demonstrated her vast improvement as a soloist
over the past year.
The
Band went into the pop number Mr. Sandman (P.
Ballard) recorded by Emmylou Harris before Eric DeWitt
and guest Ian Stewart gave an outstanding performance of
the traditional Scarborough Fair (arr. Gordon
Langford) arranged as a trombone duet. The rather corny
Chordettes pop number Lollipop (Beverley Ross &
Julius Dixon) preceded the splendid Salvation Army march
Praise (W. Heaton). The Band finished a well
supported concert with Symphony of the Seas (arr.
Darrol Barry) which includes sea shanties and imposing
traditional melodies. In response to tumultuous
applause, Seventy-Six Trombones (Meredith Willson)
gave the trombone section another chance to shine
forth. An excellent and enjoyable concert by the Band.
Chichester City Band next appear at Stoughton fete on
July 19th and Sidlesham Fete the following week.
A full
