The Band staged its first own Best of Brass concert in Selsey on Friday evening, May 23rd, after having appeared at the Selsey Centre on several previous engagements in support of various local functions. After its rewarding result at the Southern Counties Amateur Bands Association Entertainment Contest at The Hawth, Crawley, the previous week, it was natural the
Band should include four of the numbers in its performance at Selsey.
The Band got off to a rousing start with Fanfare & Flourishes (J. Curnow) and followed with Pirates Of The Caribbean : Dead Man’s Chest (H. Zimmer) which film music may have come over a trifle lost on a mainly elderly audience. A quintet of three Ebb basses and two BBb basses performing Wanderin’ Star (F. Loewe), if somewhat a little unbalanced, provided the
evening’s comedy which presented surprise and humour to the appreciative audience.
Alexis The Duo, due to perform shortly on The X Factor, was a supporting act comprising a female vocalist and keyboards player who provided a brief respite for the Band providing three numbers before the Band broke into another trio of numbers.
Donna Britt proved the night’s star with a brilliant, sensitive flugel solo Our Love Is Here To Stay (George Gershwin) with the band enabling her performance to permeate the audience with a peaceful rendering of the hymn tune The Lord Is Gracious (D. Bartlett). The half finished with a lively Mexican tune El Es El Senor (D. Jones). Regaining breath, a balanced
start to the second half produced a steady march King Cotton (J.P. Sousa) followed by an extremely sympathetic traditional Welsh air All Through The Night (arr. G. Langford) with the old favourite Spanish Eyes (B. Kaempfert) leading into another three performance by Alexis The Duo including I Dreamed A Dream (C-M. Schonberg) delicately accompanied by the Band. Mr. Sandman (P. Ballard) restarted the programme
before New York, New York (J. Kander). The Band concluded with the thunderous theme music Zulu, from the Battle of Rorke’s Drift. The Can-Can (J. Offenbach) was performed in response to continuous applause for an encore.
Their next appearance in Selsey will be at the same venue on August 5th.
The Band also turned out for the Pacific & Oceanic departure of the liner Oceana from Southampton on May 25th and is due at Slindon Fete on June 7th.
A full programme of appearances may be obtained from the Geoff Penfold, the Band’s Secretary, on 01403 731195 or the website.
