Now that we are all back from our Summer holidays, it is time to turn our attentions back to matters musical, and in particular the annual scaba workshop, which this year will be for cornets and flugel horns to be held on Sunday 28th November 2010 in the Cranleigh Bandroom.

scaba are pleased to welcome RICHARD MARSHALL as Tutor for the 2010 workshop. Richard is one of the finest cornet players of his generation, he began playing the cornet at the age of 9 and it was in 1996 that he became principal cornet of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a position he held for 10 years. During this time Richard gained a BA (Hons) in Band Studies and an LRSM in Bandmastership.

Richard is a regular tutor with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Yorkshire Youth Brass Band and the International Brass Band Summer School. He is also a cornet tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire.

He is currently principal cornet of the world famous Black Dyke Band, a position that is known as the “hottest seat in banding”!.

As anyone who has attended one of our previous workshops will know, there has always been an equal amount of entertainment and education, and this year promises to be no different. We shall be treated to some wonderful playing from Richard, receive tips and advice on improving ability and playing performance, and there will be plenty of opportunity to flex our own musical muscles and ‘have a blow’.

Once again our normal team of caterers will be keeping us refreshed and we will of course be in the Cranleigh Bandroom, (Village Way, Cranleigh, GU6 8AF), which has the perfect facilities. For those without the assistance of sat navs, turn off the High Street (the main road through Cranleigh) into Village Way which runs beside the Village Hall. It is sign-posted Leisure Centre.

The cost of the workshop will be £30 which includes lunch. For those in fulltime education the fee is only £20 inclusive.

The newly re-structured Autumn Contest organised by scaba and taking place on 16 October 2010 [...]

The newly re-structured Autumn Contest organised by scaba and taking place on 16 October 2010 at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone, has proved so popular that Contest Manager Jane Stewart has announced that entry to the contest has now been officially closed, two weeks ahead of schedule.

Having historically been held over two days and suffering dwindling numbers in recent years, the new structure will witness a one-day event featuring an impressive 34 bands and the appointment of two judges.

Commenting on the impressive and quick response of bands, Jane said: “scaba is delighted at the response of its competing bands to this change in format and we look forward to running a vibrant and rejuvenated contest in the Autumn. Originally we set a limit of 30 bands and this has been surpassed, to the degree that we will now be appointing a second adjudicator for the event.”

A full list of competing bands and further information will be released soon.

LGB Brass will be giving a concert in memory of Jenny Line on Friday 3rd September. The concert will take place at the Kings Church in Eastbourne at 7.30pm.

Jenny was a long serving member of the band, playing Tenor Horn and Flugel. She originally started on Cornet at Eastbourne Silver Band, and along with her husband Tony, helped out many bands in the area during her playing career.

Jenny was diagnosed with a non-smoking related lung cancer in 2007 and sadly lost her fight in January 2009. At the request of her family, all the proceeds from the concert will be donated to Cancer Research. We are delighted that the Kings Church have given the hall free of charge and that the local branch of Cancer Research will be there to support us.

Tickets cost £5.00 and includes a complimentary drink during the interval.

Tickets are available by post or in person, from:

Brass for Life, Kings Centre, 27 Edison Road, Eastbourne, BN23 6PT or by telephone on (01323) 521125 (Credit Cards Accepted).

2011 will be a milestone year for Alder Valley Brass (formally the Aldershot Brass Ensemble) as they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary. The band has come a long way from very humble beginnings. Rehearsals were first held in their founder’s (George Prior – a fine trombone player from The Rhonda Valley) front room but now take place in a dedicated rehearsal venue in Badshot Lea.

As part of the celebrations, AVB are contacting ex members of the band and hoping to see them during 2011. If there are any ex members of the band who would like to be kept up to date with the plans, please contact Brain Balls (brizie@btinternet.com). Members of the band would also especially appreciate stories and photographs from ex members of the band for inclusion in a souvenir brochure of the band’s long history.

A number of events are planned during 2011 and, in particular, AVB will tour Switzerland in January, record a brand new CD (due early in 2011) and a host a gala concert on 3rd July 2011 at the Princes Hall in Aldershot with Gordon Campbell, principal trombone of the BBC Big Band, as guest artiste. Following this concert, there will be a formal reunion to which all ex members are invited.

2011 will also see Alder Valley Brass promoted back in to the First Section having represented the London and Southern Counties region at the National Finals in Harrogate back in 2008 and again later this year in September.
