The local association for Brass Bands in the Southern Counties of England

Formed in 1893 as the “Southern Counties Amateur Bands Association”, scaba is the local association for brass bands in the South Eastern counties of England. Our core membership is drawn from Surrey and Sussex; any band from these counties and from Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, London, Middlesex or Oxfordshire is eligible for membership.

The objects of scaba are to raise musical standards, foster the spirit of good fellowship amongst members, undertake the organisation or supervision of brass band contests in the area and to obtain for our member bands all possible advantages and privileges consequent upon an organised combination.
scaba is a member of Brass Bands England and has representatives on the committee of the London & Southern Counties region of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, which organises and staffs the Regional contest in Stevenage every March.

scaba is proud to have formed the Southern Counties Youth Band in 2014, providing young players from all over the region the opportunity to learn from talented brass teachers and musicians and perform to new audiences. More information about the youth band can be found on the SCYB page of this website, and new players are always very welcome – your band does NOT have to be a scaba member for your young players to take part in SCYB. We also offer support for players joining the Natiopnal youth and Childrens bands of GB through the Bob & Peggy Tucker Memorial Bursary.

scaba has always been a very active association and works hard to put the interests of its member bands and brass players first. In the course of a year scaba hosts regular monthly rehearsals for SCYB from September through to a Residential course every Easter, a workshop in November and a very popular Solo and Quartet competition. We also hold 3 full band contests at The Hawth in Crawley: the Spring contest in April (moving to February in 2018), Entertainments in May and the Autumn contest at the end of September. The scaba team has 4 open meetings every year which all member bands are invited to send representatives to, and they are on hand 365 days a year to give advice and share resources.
